Final Posters + Rationales + Poster wall example

The angle taken in my works was that; private schools are restrictive, therefore you should choose to attend public schools. In order to illustrate this I took an anti-private schooling approach with a controversial tone.
“Choke hold” employs juxtaposition though the pairing of the neck of the tie with the highlighted statement “CHOKE HOLD” to suggest the action of choking and create a feeling of tightness/restriction. The arrangement of the two elements also resembles the cross in two ways; firstly, as a religious symbol, as religion is often linked with private schooling, and secondly, the idea of the cross resembling death; a potential result of choking/strangulation. It uses colour to suggest both private schooling (greens and reds in the tie) and death/pain with the dark red text in an exploration of ihi.. The wehi response to this is a sense of tension created between the juxtaposing of the tagline and the tie. It is a strong statement, and a bold choice of words that evokes an unnerved and uncomfortable feeling in response.

The angle taken in my works was that; private schools are restrictive, therefore you should choose to attend public schools. In order to illustrate this I took an anti-private schooling approach with a controversial tone.
“Straitjacket” employs dynamism and juxtaposition though the use of repetition/rhythm and change in scale. It uses these rhetoric tools along with; a strong sense of grid, navy as a representation of elite private schooling, and orange to contrast and highlight the brightness public schooling has to offer, in order to explore ihi.. The blazer and tie haphazardly tossed away and exiting the page on the right suggests escaping from the strict hold of private school. The wehi response to this is a sense of tension between the tight, straight, closely organised blazers and the empty space with the crumpled uniform. It has a strong contrast between the dark navy of the blazers and the harsh white of the background. This is intentionally trying to make the message clear, bold, and stark. It is a confronting statement that evokes an unnerved feeling in response.

Week 6, session 2

What a cool finish to the project!
We all laid out our 2 finished posters and walked around and looked at each other's. It was awesome to see how far some people had come from interim presentations, and some new ideas that had emerged. After that, we all sat together and discussed the project, how we felt about it and what was to come for our future projects.

Week 6, session 1

I arrived at studio today with one piece that I was really happy with, and one piece that I needed some advice on.
Phoebe gave me some really awesome ideas around my 'straitjacket' and the idea of breaking it out to the edge again to show that you can get free/escape. So I took this and ran with it and did lots of iterations playing with the size of that escaping gap and the scale of the blazers and things until I got to a final solution that I was really happy with. She also discussed with me that the initial relationship I created between my word and image on the 'choke hold' poster was the strongest and that it is ok to recognise that and use it in the final product. I just played around with the logo and the text thickness/kerning.

This afternoon I went out home to a local Warehouse Stationery to print my posters and buy the card stock backing and tracing paper cover. I was mostly pretty happy with the prints except for one minor hiccup that was actually an error in my file. It is not very noticeable but down the left hand sleeve of every blazer is a small strip of the dark red burgundy colour I had been trying out.

It took a lot longer to mount and cut the board then I anticipated but I am really stoked with the final results ready for hand-in tomorrow.
I am going to do my rationale and poster wall photoshops tonight and then make a few last minute notes in my workbook on the train in the morning and then I'll be finished!

Week 5, individual work

After getting such a lot of feedback I really tried to make my work move and develop during this week. I had to source uniform for generating my own imagery and was able to get one off a friend. The harder part was trying to take good quality images to use on a large scale. I don't have a camera and didn't have a lot of time to book a studio at uni so I had to make do with my trusty iPhone ;). Luckily I was able to get a nice cut out using a self created vector and layering it with my photograph.
I tried a lot of different things, and I feel like my repetition idea developed heaps and I even came up with a new tagline, but with my other concept I kept coming back to my original relationship between the tie and the text.
I have lots to show and discuss with Phoebe and Jacquie in the morning so that I can get to the best possible/strongest final.

Week 5, session 2

Today was dedicated studio and feedback time which was awesome.
Whilst Jacqui and Phoebe were talking to some of the other students in the class I worked on iterating my "50 shades" concept and then I got heaps of helpful feedback from the tutors.
In terms of that series of concepts, the stripes was valued and they thought that putting the logo within the word 'conformity' was too clever. They understood why I put the tagline in but weren't sure it was necessary. Then Phoebe brought up the fact that even though it was a cool and interesting concept what relation does public schooling have to the 50 shades idea in society today? And the answer to that was nothing really - it was just an idea. And whilst she appreciated the pastiche idea behind it, it was really valuable feedback! So now that we are scrapping the "50 shades" from the concept, they liked the idea of introducing colour and the tagline becomes more necessary.
I showed them the blazer concept I had to compare as they were the same type of idea and personally I preferred the blazer visually. Phoebe agreed that there was definitely something more interesting about the blazer but maybe I need to rework the actual blazer vector so that it has more detail. Jacqui suggested I could work with shorter taglines - simply "Conformity OR Individuality?"
In playing with colours they wanted me to look at the traditional burgundy's, greens, navy's and textures (stripes/plaid).
I then was able to talk to Phoebe about my other pathway for exploring this angle. I showed her the stress/heartbeat concept that I had been working on and whilst she liked the metphor behind it she asked me what had happened to my 'chokehold' idea as that was stronger. I told her because it was just an initial idea I had moved on past it, but she suggested to me to go back to that concept and iterate that one instead which I am more than happy about. I was worried that because it was one of my initial ideas I should have moved far away from that in terms of getting to a final but she explained to me that sometimes the design process takes you all over the place and you end up realising that you need to go back to that initial idea and just tweak it because it is actually the strongest. So now I need to source my a private school uniform to take photos of to use as the one I had done my initial concept with was not my own.
This classes' feedback was really beneficial to me so I am excited to see how my iteration work goes - I am a little worried though as I am not a photography student so I hope the photo's I take will look good :/

Week 5, session 1

Today we had interim and shared moment.
We all printed out our posters and pinned them up on the wall - I wasn't sure how to go about printing A2 so printed A3 instead (Jasmine was able to show me how she did it later during class).
We then went into the presentation room to hear from the photography students which was really interesting. They have approached the brief completely differently to us but it had merit behind it and was inspiring to see such different interpretations, and how they try to balance the relationship between word + image.
They then came to our studio and looked at our posters and 2 of my peers spoke about their work and then their was an informal type discussion. Getting some opinion from the different perspectives could've been really helpful but everyone is very quiet :P
We then had a break before having our own interim within our studio.
We were grouped into 4's and went through some pre-prepared questions the we had collectively come up with. This was really frustrating because my group members weren't very vocal about how my work made them feel or how to improve it so I felt like I didn't get a lot of feedback at all.
After we got through all of that it was the end of our session.
Hopefully during studio tomorrow I will be able to get some constructive feedback from my tutors so that I can get the best outcome possible for hand-in next week.

Week 4, session 2

I wasn't able to make it to class today but I was able to work from home which was good and productive (caught up on some workbook stuff I hadn't done and re-jigged my ideas to come up with some new concepts). I also was able to make contact with my class mate Hannah who gave me the run down of what had occurred in class:
The class was given prompts like (zoom in, zoom out, change perspective, change hierarchy, repetition, contrast...) and then applied these to the best concepts so far to try and improve them.
Discussion of homework - favourite typography posters from the pinterest page.
Then they swapped strongest posters with another class member and "pimped" each other's posters for a half hour.
Homework for interim on Monday = 2 A2 posters

Week 4, session 1

During the past week I have been working on designing a logo to use and conceptual work from my discussion with Phoebe at the end of studio last week.
We started class today by looking at some examples Phoebe had brought in and they were really inspiring but also really daunting. They were all really clever and said a lot through image and then had a very small tagline to contextualise the poster. I want to have that kind of success with my poster design but I think I will need to refresh some ideas and put on my thinking cap as to how I can make impact subtly.
Anyway, we then moved on to showing our peers what we had been working on and then had to pick a best development from our group to present to the class. My group liked the development I'd made on my "chokehold" poster by zooming in/cropping so they presented it. Both lecturers seemed pleased that I'd been playing with the FADP's and trying different things and I got some really helpful feedback from both lecturers and peers.
I was also able to get feedback from my peers on my logo designing work which was really helpful and I intent to work on it and have it finalised for class tomorrow.
We briefly went to the presentation room to look at a pinterest board of poster design using text/image.
HOMEWORK: pick 3 and analyse them - what you like/don't like, why you picked them/what made them stand out, what is interesting about the typography/how has it been used.
